Treatment - Film Noir

Intro:
The following production design is a film noir short film based of the Grim brother’s tale of Hansel and Gretel. Psych tells the story of two detectives who are sent by their boss to a location on a case to uncover a murder mystery. The two detectives arrive at the location only to be lured in by a mysterious man who introduces himself as a nearby resident of the area, and claims to know information and the exact location of the recent murders that have been taking place. Unsure about the mans intentions or sincerity, the two detectives take a leap of faith and follow the man to the supposed location of the murders, only to be captured and held hostage at the mans house. With the two detectives being gone for such a long period of time, their boss decides to take matters into her own hands and arrives at the location and finds the two detectives dead, killed by the mysterious man. She enters the house acting surprised at first yet a conversation starts with the two about a previous business deal between them, and we find out that the mysterious man is actually a hit man who had been hired by the boss to kill the two detectives, because of competition at their work firm. Despite their business deal the boss refuses to pay the man and ends up killing the hit man as well. 

Synopsis:
A quick montage of close-ups, reveal a man being murdered. Amanda’s high heels are shown. Two detectives walk away from the camera through a corridor. A medium shot from behind them shows the desk and a chair facing away from them. The chair turns around and their boss, Amanda, assigns them to a murder investigation.  Amanda stands up dismissing them. As they walk out the door she says “don’t let me down.” Then sits and chuckles to herself.

The two detectives leave Amanda’s office to begin the murder case, they are shown leaning against a wall with a map of the area. Marking areas on the map where they suspect to find any evidence or knowledge of where the murderer could be located. The next shot shows a suspicious man slowly approaching the two detectives (with harsh shadows cast across his face). He tells them that he has information on the recent killings that have been taking place. Expressing interest the detectives ask about what he knows, they receive no response from the suspicious man except a gesture to follow him as he walks away. Apprehensive and confused the detectives follow in the mans directions anyway despite their suspicions, they follow the man as he leads them under the bridge. Only the silhouette of the three can be seen. The suspicious man suddenly grabs a baseball bat and begins beating the two detectives to their death. Regaining composure the hit man exists the crime scene swiftly, looking pleased of his work. Shortly after the hit man enters into another office firm and sits down in one of the chairs in front of a large desk. He then speaks to another person in the room who has yet to be identified,



“The job has been done, i can’t believe you actually went through with it, you’re an intriguing woman. ” The chair spins around to reveal Amanda who smiles in response to his words. The hitman begins asking about a form of payment he is yet to receive from her ‘So… about the money.’ Amanda laughs stands up walks around to stand behind his chair “You didn’t think I was actually going to pay you for the job did you? she laughs. ‘Unfortunately for you, this will be the end of your career You’re a bad man, mr lingley…”. Confused and uneasy the hitman rises from his seat and looks at Amanda. The screen fades to black and then reveals a close up shot of Amanda on the phone to the police as she says “911, My two best detectives have been murdered and I have the murderer”, she then continues to say “he’s here for you to come and collect. Please hurry, I’m worried he will regain consciousness”. Amanda hangs up the phone and has a sly expression on her face as she exists her office. The film ends with a shot of her walking in the corridor of the office firm, panning slowly down to reveal her wearing a pair of red heels, the hitman dead lying in the foreground.


Character Profiles:
Hansel is a 24 year old male with short brown hair. He is short in slim in build with brown eyes. He is a very smart detective with very good problem solving schools. He works as a very professional detective. He is very confident in his work as he has never left an assignment unsolved and believes nobody knows of him or what he does as he is very subtle when solving his assignments. This is not true as although he is very good at solving crimes he is not always so subtle. He's biggest fear is not completing an assignment as he prides himself on his work.

Gretel is a 23 year old female with long blonde hair. She is slim and average in height with blue eyes. She is partners with Gretel in the detective business. While she not as good of a problem solver she is good at covering her tracks and keeping her work on the down low. She is more of an introvert but is very smart. Though she does not fear much, is very independent and keeps to herself, when it comes to her work with Gretel she is a very good at teamwork.

Amanda is a 28 year old female with long blonde hair. She has a slim build and average in height with blue eyes. She is Hansel and Gretel’s boss and is in charge of appointing their assignments. She is very smart and deceiving, also very used to getting her own way no matter what. She is very good at mind games and tricking people into doing things. Her biggest fear is being caught for murder.

Mr Lingley is a 29 year old male with brown hair. He has an average build and not very muscular and brown eyes. He works as an undercover hitman and is the best in his line of work. He is smart and deceiving and very highly regarded in his line of work. He is good at tricking people and lying with out showing it. He does not have many fears and is quite brave be one thing he does fear is loosing his reputation.

Justification:
Throughout our film canted shots and high angle shots, as well as harsh shadowy lighting commonly seen in film noir films will be used. These camera techniques will be used to further show that our film is a film noir. These techniques will also convey a mysterious vibe towards the audience and will set the mood. Our locations (an office firm and a bridge setting) will demonstrate a sense of realism and professionalism and will show that our characters work in an office firm. The music used throughout out film will be quiet suspenseful music, which will slowly rise in intensity during murder scenes.
